PTE Exam Pattern & Syllabus – A Comprehensive Breakdown

The PTE exam is bifurcated into three main sections, namely - Speaking and Writing, Reading, and Listening. Allows us to walk you through each of them briefly.

Section I: Speaking and Writing

The first section of the PTE test is Speaking and Writing, which lasts for about 77 to 93 minutes. The section is all about oral communication and written compositions, and consists of six tasks as follows:

  • ·         Personal Introduction: Often students get nervous when it comes to introducing themselves as what information to share and what not. Do not worry; here personal introduction part will not affect your score so, however it goes, does not really matter. Still, a little preparation will do no harm. So go ahead and tell the evaluators about where you come from, what you are passionate about, and what dreams you are chasing.
  • ·         Read Aloud: In this task, you are required to read a short passage, which is almost 60 words long, aloud. This task will test how well you can read and speak, with additional emphasis on pronunciation and fluency. Practice this part more!
  • ·         Repeat Sentence: Here, you will be hearing a sentence played over, that you would have to replicate as heard.
  • ·         Describe Image: Seeing images, scenery and likewise in everyday life is common. You have to do similar thing in this part. You will be shown an image and you have to describe it in detail. This will test your ability to deliver a well-structured response within a time limit.
  • ·         Re-tell Lecture: Again, you will be hearing an audio clip along with an image that you have to summarize in your own words. This will evaluate your listening and speaking capabilities.
  • ·         Summarize Written Text: An excerpt around 300 words long will be provided to you, which you will summarize in a single sentence. Seems tough? With thorough preparation, you will do fine. So, don’t worry. Your understanding and writing skills will be under evaluation.
  • ·         Essay: Lastly, you will have to come up with a 200-300-word essay on a given topic under 20 minutes. Phew! Slow writers will have to buckle up. Start practice writing anything that comes to your mind. Surely, it will help you fasten up your writing speed. Oh! Also, your argument formation, written communication skills, and grammar will be tested.

Section II: Reading

The second part of the test is all about figuring out how well you can read. It takes around 32 to 41 minutes. This part has five reading comprehension exercises - filling in blanks, answering multiple-choice questions, putting paragraphs in the right order, doing more blanks filling, and reading and writing exercises. Each part of this reading test checks a different ability. You will have to shine bright in all.

Section III: Listening

The final part of the test is all about assessing how well you listen. It is going to take you somewhere between 45 to 57 minutes. We have eight tasks ready for you:
